Invitation to live next door to George and Amal Clooney

23:30 Tue, 30 Dec 2025

George and Amal Clooney have been in the news today after receiving French citizenship.

An interesting observation is that their villa is almost right next door to the Benedictine monastary established by Dom Alcuin Reid.

( Directions)

Dom Alcuin Reid is from Melbourne. He left the seminary for reasons that have not been well explained. He was invited to operate the English-speaking Benedictine monastery in the south of France. In 2022, a bishop outside France secretly ordained Dom Alcuin Reid as a priest. One of the other monks was secretly ordained as a deacon. The public and the Catholic faithful remain in the dark.

The story of secret ordinations taking place in the church reminded me of the secret demotions used to hide the Debian suicide cluster. What an uncanny coincidence. One of the victims died on our wedding day and it was Palm Sunday.

Nonetheless, the monastery invites male visitors over 18 to come and live with them and discover the monastic lifestyle. The advertisement doesn't state the fact the next-door-neighbors are the Clooneys:

Our classical Benedictine monastic observance is centred upon the solemn celebration of the Sacred Liturgy according to the older, classical forms of the Roman and Monastic Rites and is supported through our manual and intellectual work.

The Monastère Saint-Benoît welcomes all to their celebrations of the Monastic Office and Holy Mass (celebrated in Latin according to the usus antiquior) in our beautiful 10th century Romanesque church. The weekly schedule is posted here.

Men of 18 years of age or over are welcome to ask to stay in the monastery guest accommodation for a time of retreat and should contact the Guest Master. Our guest accommodation is limited. Ladies and families are welcome to arrange their own accommodation locally and are able to participate in the monastic offices, all of which are open to the public and are celebrated in the monastery church.

Monks are available for Confession or spiritual advice. The Monks welcome requests for prayer and accept intentions for Mass to be offered. Please contact us.

Men discerning the possibility of a Benedictine vocation are welcome to visit the monastery and to share in its daily life and work for an extended period. In the first instance they should write to the Prior.

The Monastery welcomes those who wish to associate themselves more formally with the prayer and the work of the community as Oblates. For further details, contact the Master of Oblates.

By coincidence, I had the fortunate opportunity to meet Mgr Rey, the former bishop of this region, at a recent event in Lyon.
