Joel "Espy" Klecker was the first significant death to transpire in the Debian world.
The sanitised version of the Debian history gives us a statement that is not completely true. We will see further evidence in future blogs. Here is the quote from the sanitised Debian history:
On July 11th, 2000, Joel Klecker, who was also known as Espy, passed away at 21 years of age. No one who saw 'Espy' in #mklinux, the Debian lists or channels knew that behind this nickname was a young man suffering from a form of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Most people only knew him as 'the Debian glibc and powerpc guy' and had no idea of the hardships Joel fought. Though physically impaired, he shared his great mind with others.
Joel Klecker (also known as Espy) will be missed.
Nonetheless, Klecker knew about Duchenne muscular dystrophy for his entire life.
Looking at the Debian Project Leader elections we can see that Klecker nominated himself for leader (platform) just six months before he died.
Even if nobody else knew about Klecker's illness, Klecker himself knew about it at the time he submitted the nomination and wrote the platform.
The following quote from Klecker's platform stands out. Klecker was well ahead of his time:
The streets will flow with the blood of the non-believers!
Through his actions and words, the 21 year old Klecker has anticipated the two biggest issues in the current US Presidential election: will Biden be healthy for another four years and the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.
RIP Joel "Espy" Klecker.
