In the news today, reports have appeared about a man being ejected from a tennis tournament and arrested by police on allegations of "fixated behavior". It is important for fans to know what type of behavior is and isn't a crime so that other people won't do the same thing. Nobody has specified what the fixated behavior involved. He has been banned without any explanation. Therefore, it appears the book has been closed on this case, there will be no appeal and we might never know what he actually did. It sounds a lot like the mystery of Sonny Piers and arrested Outreachies at GNOME.
When I lived in Manchester, anti-terrorist police raided a Muslim family in the next street on suspicion of plotting an attack on Manchester United. The investigation was made public. The outcome: they were simply a bunch of refugees who became obsessed with football. In other words, they were just like any other Manchester United fan.
Manchester United supporters have been helping Iraqi Kurdish refugees who were wrongly accused of plotting to bomb Old Trafford.
On 19 April 2004, over 400 police officers conducted dawn ‘anti-terror’ raids across the UK and arrested ten people on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. Within hours, the arrests were connected to an Al-Qaida plot to blow up Old Trafford – the home of Manchester United Football Club. Police sources were quoted in newspapers as saying ‘the plot involved several individual bombers in separate parts of the stadium’.
The only other detail provided about the Emma Raducanu fan is that their paths crossed in a public area of a hotel and he gave her a letter. There has been no comment about the content of the letter. Nobody has even mentioned if the player read the letter.
I remember we first started to get digital (GSM) mobile phones in 1997 and I received a text message from somebody of the opposite sex for the first time. I was a bit startled. I was with some friends at the rowing club and I wondered out loud whether I should just take the message at face value or whether there was some deeper meaning when a woman chooses to communicate by text.
Now I fear we see the opposite phenomena, Raducanu, 22 years old, has been bubble wrapped by the filters on social control media. If the letter didn't contain anything offensive, if the only thing that startled her was the form of the communication, just as I was startled by that first text message, maybe she overreacted. Raducanu became a pro in 2018 and reached number 10 ranking in 2022. She has had a few years as a celebrity but maybe she is still getting used to that.
The news reports also describe another alleged stalker who, amongst other things, was accused of sending unwanted gifts. There is more detail about his behavior, including the fact he stole a shoe but the fact they added "unwanted gifts" to his charge sheet sounds odd. Gifts are simply a fact of life for celebrities. I know one successful female who doesn't eat chocolate. Every gift of chocolate is an unwanted gift for her. She simply gives them away to her friends.
I feel the real culprit here is her support team and sporting association. Most of the tennis stars reach celebrity status at a very young age, before becoming adults. It is vital to prepare them for the fact that they will meet a wide range of people from different ages and cultures and people will sometimes surprise them. Social control media has created a situation where young people grow up in a bubble and the first time they receive a real birthday card or a real flower is a shock for them.
Several Olympic medal winners went to our school. One member of the Australian rowing team came to speak at a school assembly in 1996. If I remember correctly, most of the students were far more fixated on his speech than on the official announcements from the headmaster.
It is a really scary thought but if no further evidence is provided then what we have seen is somebody getting arrested simply for being a fan.
Another scary thought: anybody who is keen on sports betting may try to replicate whatever happened here so they can influence or throw a match. This is why it is so important for the sporting associations to provide transparency about the incident and also make sure that the players are not startled by something that may have been nothing more than a fan reaching out in an act of kindness.
